Prepare For Those Coming Cold Spells

brrrrr

We may not get snow, but it could get cold this coming winter. Take advantage of a cool day to keep your home warm this winter! Here are a few tips to help you through another season.

  1. Tune-up. Call us today at 877-237-9700 to schedule service for your system. Regular maintenance helps prevent breakdowns and ensures that your system works at peak efficiency. Tune-ups also extend the life of your system.

  2. Fill the hole. If you combined all the gaps around windows and doors of an average home, you would end up with a 9-square-foot hole in your wall. Nearly half of all the energy used in a home escapes through that “hole.” To save money, use caulk to fill gaps, cracks, and small holes in areas where:

    • A wall and the outside frame of a window or door come together.
    • Floors meet outside walls.
    • Pipes and cables enter your home.
  3. Use weather stripping to stop drafts around the edges of doors and windows. It’s ideal for older windows, which usually have gaps between the window sash and sill. You can also install a weather stripping “sweep” at the bottom of doors to block drafts.

  4. Preventive medicine. Studies have shown that only about 55 percent of U.S. homeowners have their heating equipment serviced regularly. Those who don’t generally experience higher bills and more repairs.

Approximately 75 percent of all emergency repairs can be prevented with regular maintenance.

  5. Keep warm air circulating. You can distribute the heat evenly in rooms if you have a ceiling fan that runs in reverse (All fans made in the last two years have blades that spin in both directions).

By re-circulating the warm air trapped near the ceiling, you can lower your thermostat. Energy efficient fans use 75 percent less energy than conventional ones and can save you about $15 in costs each year.
